Waking Up In The Night Is Common

Most people you talk to will have had problems with sleeping at least at one point in their life. This can be for various reasons, which we will cover later on in the article. In fact, nearly all people wake up 2-3 times per night. This is because the normal sleep cycle is about 2 hours long and your sleep is lightest at the end of each two hour period. Especially for women, it is more common to wake up during the night as you get older. The problems arise when you start waking up and not being able to get back to sleep.

Reasons You May Not Be Sleeping Well

Now that we have covered the mechanics of your sleeping, we can look at the reasons why your sleep may be particularly light at any given moment in time.
Taking Your Stress To Bed
One of the main reasons people sleep badly is because they take their stress to bed. If you are having a stressful day trying to participate in mindful activities or meditation before you get into bed. This will help you to unwind and forget the stresses of your day.
Bad Eating Habits
Eating the wrong foods too close to bedtime is another mistake people make. Unfortunately, the list of things to avoid is basically a list of “most common favourite foods”. It includes Ice Cream, Pasta, Pizza, Candy Bars, Cereal and Garlic. Try to have more soothing foods like milk, honey and almonds to aim for a better night’s sleep.

Too Much Screentime
Using your phone or laptop all the way up until bedtime is another sure fire way to keep you up at night. The bright light keeps you awake long after you have turned the machine off. Try to put these things down at least half an hour before bedtime to improve your sleep.
No Sleep Routine
The last mistake that people make is not having a common sleep routine. If you are constantly going to bed at different times then this will really negatively affect your sleep. Try to get into the habit of going to sleep and waking up at the same time.
