One of the most successful British
sitcoms ever made brings a
barrel load of laughs to Trouble
this week as double bills of the BAFTAnominated
show Desmond’s continue
their hilarious run.
Set in a barber
shop in Peckham, South London,
Desmond’s focuses on Desmond
Ambrose (Norman Beaton) and his
West Indian friends and family.
Very
little hairdressing takes place in the
shop – instead it is a place for friends
to meet and discuss the intricacies of
their lives.
As well as the humorous
escapades the characters recount,
much is made of the differences
between the West Indian generation
and their British-born offspring.
Other key characters in the show
include Shirley (Carmen Munroe),
Desmond’s long-suffering wife, and
Porkpie (Ram John Holder), Desmond’s
best friend from the old country who is
so called due to his omnipresent hat.
Holder went on to became the star of
his own show: Porkpie.
Desmond’s has
often been cited as the British answer
to The Cosby Show, with Bill Cosby
himself being a massive fan – so much
so that he invited Beaton to appear in
an episode of The Cosby Show, where
he starred as a cricket-mad doctor.
First up this week, Desmond is looking
forward to a stress-free few days as
Shirley and his children are going
away. Unfortunately, his dream is
shattered after an overly generous
offer leaves him holding the baby.
Next, Desmond’s son Michael (Geff
Francis) panics when he remembers a
promise he made to his friends at
graduation.
The group of chums agreed
to meet up five years after they
finished college to compare progress –
it seemed like a good idea at the time,
but now Michael worries his
achievements are less than impressive.
